Information about light treatment

What is UVB treatment?

Light therapy

UVB (ultraviolet B) is a type of ultraviolet light that has been shown to have a positive effect on many skin conditions. UVB light can be divided into two main categories:

  • NB-UVB (narrow band UVB) : The most effective and widely used form of UVB light for treating skin conditions. It is a narrower and more controlled wavelength of UVB light.
  • BB-UVB (broad band UVB) : Also used in treatment, but is less accurate than NB-UVB and may have more side effects.

UVB treatment is usually done with lamps that emit controlled amounts of UVB light to reduce inflammation and stimulate the skin's healing process.

Skin conditions treated with UVB light

1. Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease that causes skin cells to grow too quickly, leading to scaly, red patches on the skin. UVB treatment is one of the most effective methods for reducing the symptoms of psoriasis. Narrowband UVB (NB-UVB) is particularly effective, as it can slow down the production of skin cells and reduce inflammation.

2. Vitiligo

Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease in which the pigment cells in the skin are destroyed, leading to white patches on the skin. UVB light, especially NB-UVB, can stimulate pigment production and restore color to the affected skin areas.

3. Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)

Eczema is an inflammation of the skin that causes itching, redness, and dryness. UVB treatment, especially NB-UVB, can be useful in reducing inflammation and relieving symptoms of eczema.

4. Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is a skin condition that causes red patches and flaky skin, most often on the face and scalp. UVB treatment can reduce inflammation and suppress excess skin production.

Benefits of UVB treatment

  • Effectiveness : UVB treatment is a proven method that can provide long-lasting results in treating skin conditions such as psoriasis and vitiligo.
  • Non-invasive : The treatment is non-invasive and does not require surgery or strong medications.
  • Fewer side effects : Compared to other treatments, such as oral medication, UVB treatment often has fewer side effects.

Side effects and precautions

There are certain risks associated with UVB light therapy that are good to be aware of:

  • Skin irritation : Redness or dryness of the skin may occur after treatment.
  • Increased risk of skin cancer : Prolonged and excessive exposure to UV light can increase the risk of skin cancer, so it is important that the treatment is carried out under professional supervision.
  • Eye protection : Eyes should be protected during treatment, as UV light can cause eye damage.

It is also important to follow your doctor's instructions regarding frequency and length of treatment to avoid side effects.
