What is UVB treatment?

Light therapy

UVB (ultraviolet B) is a type of ultraviolet light that can have a positive effect on several skin conditions. UVB is often divided into two variants.

NB UVB (narrow band)

The most common and widely used form of UVB. Provides a more controlled and even treatment.

BB UVB (broad band)

An older method that is used less often today because it is less accurate and can cause more side effects.

Skin conditions that can be treated with UVB light

Psoriasis

A chronic skin condition in which skin cells grow too quickly, forming red, scaly patches. UVB, especially NB UVB, can slow down cell division and reduce inflammation.

Vitiligo

A condition where pigment cells are affected and white spots appear. NB UVB can stimulate pigment and contribute to a more even skin tone over time.

Eczema (atopic dermatitis)

Inflammation that can cause itching, redness and dry skin. UVB can reduce inflammation and relieve symptoms.

Seborrheic dermatitis

Can cause redness and scaling, often on the face or scalp. UVB can help reduce discomfort when used in a controlled manner.

Benefits of UVB treatment

  • Proven method that is often used for psoriasis and vitiligo, among other things.
  • Non-invasive and can be experienced as a gentle alternative
  • May cause mild side effects when used correctly and under controlled conditions

Side effects and precautions

As with all light exposure, there are things to be aware of.

  • Skin irritation such as temporary redness or dryness
  • Prolonged overexposure can increase the risk of skin damage, therefore the dose should be controlled.
  • Eye protection should always be worn during treatment.

Always follow prescribed procedures and recommendations for frequency, distance, and treatment time.
